Cartagena is a walled colonial city on Colombia's Caribbean coast. Five days covers the old town, the street art and food of Getsemaní, and a full day out on the Rosario Islands — which is the beach the city itself does not have.
The walls are the reason the old town survived: eleven kilometres of them, built over two centuries to keep out the privateers who had already sacked the city more than once. Inside is a grid of balconied houses, small plazas and churches you can cross in twenty minutes.
Getsemaní, just outside the walls, is where the city actually lives now — murals, street food and plaza life in the evening. Ten years ago it was the neighbourhood guides told you to avoid; today it is the reason to stay an extra night.
The city beaches are not the point. The Rosario Islands, an hour out by boat, are — white sand, clear water and a beach club day that is the standard fourth day of any Cartagena trip.
